Until Next Year

We are all very proud of all that we have accomplished and our amazing donation of 8000 cans. As we close up this chapter, we wanted to share some final images of our CANstruction of SFMOMA. A special thank you to Ronald Thai Photography for generously donating his photography services to us! This has been such an incredible experience working with McCarthy, those at CANstruction, and all of our sponsors. Check out some of the CANstruction related articles from SFWeekly, Foodista, and the SFFoodbank. Thanks again to our team and sponsors. We can't wait to do it again next year!

SFCANstruction Winners!

It has been a long time since our last post, but the competition is complete and the can sculptures are now viewable at City View at the Metreon until 7pm Saturday. The Design Partnership and McCarthy entry won honorable mention last night!

We're all very excited and proud of the hard work that everyone put into the competition. Our structure was made out of 8000 cans, and we raised more money and cans than any of the other 13 teams participating! This is an incredible accomplishment. We couldn't have done it without out team leaders: Fumi, Kristy, Ephraim, Sylvester, and Matthew. Also another special thank you to all of our sponsors. They have all been incredibly generous and we appreciate the support. Please check out the time lapse video of the build! Great job everyone! We will see you next year!

Sysco Foods sponsors CANstruction!!

Many thanks to Sysco Foods for becoming our latest Partnership Sponsor! Thanks to Matthew Mosebrook and Mark Matthew at Sysco San Francisco, we have ordered all of our cans for the brick facade and skylight cylinder of the SFMOMA through Sysco. We will receive a nice discount with their sponsorship of our efforts. Our cans will be delivered right on time for our mock up build this coming Saturday!!

We've got a well-balanced meal including garbanzo means, kidney beans, tuna, beef puree, beef slices, chicken puree, kernel corn, apple sauce, fruit cocktail, and peach slices. We've been told by our friends at the San Francisco Food Bank that protein is in high demand, so we've done our best to provide the Food Bank with lots of protein.

A special thanks also goes to Ephraim Bahiru, our team captain at McCarthy Building Companies, for approaching Sysco about being our source of canned food, and also to be a sponsor.

Thank you Sysco!

Our first MAJOR in-kind donation.....CAN STORAGE!

We are happy to report that our landlord at 1412 Van Ness Avenue, Van Ness Avenue Partnership, has graciously agreed to lend us the garage space in our office building to store our cans and build a mock-up of our sculpture in the end of May. This in-kind donation is equivalent to a Partnership sponsorship of $750!

If all goes according to plan, our cans will be delivered to the garage before our scheduled mock-up build day on May 21, 2011, exactly one month before the competition at the Metreon.

On May 21, we plan to spend the day testing the construction methods we’ve developed to build the SFMOMA and heart art, using the allowable materials in our CANstruction rule book. We are currently seeking in-kind donations for building materials, including ¼” plywood, double-sided foam tape, double stick tape, heavy-duty wire, and nylon string. If you are interested in donating any of these items, please contact us!

Thanks again to the Van Ness Avenue Partnership. Not only will we have secure storage for our thousands of cans, but we'll also be able to test the constructability of our design, and work out any kinks before build day on June 21, 2011.

Stay tuned!

Last week was our first Bake for CANstruction and we pulled quite a few donations. Thank you to everyone who donated! This week Elizabeth is making some CANstruction Candy! Sounds delicious.

In other news, John announced that The Design Partnership will match contributions by DP staff up to $1000. If every employee donates $25, we will raise $1150 + $1000 match = $2150 from DP alone. Thank you John for this generous donation match!

We're LIVE!

We are officially live!!! Last week, Kristy created some wonderful renderings of the SFMOMA with the can labels in place. We're excited with how far the design has come, but there is still much fund raising to do. Our goal is to have all of our sponsors in place by May 10th and all other monetary donations by May 15th. Once we have all of our funds in place, we'll be staging a mock-up of the design on Saturday, May 21. The schedule is tight, and we need everyone's help to make this a successful event. Please take the time to donate with the paypal button on the right side bar. All donations are tax deductible and any amount will be appreciated. And don't forget to tell your friends and family!

Design Concept

The design submissions have been finalized and we can finally reveal our concept! Our piece is called "I Left My Art in San Francisco" and will feature the SFMOMA with a gallery on the interior. The gallery will include a heart representing the San Francisco Heart's in SF Art Project. Kristy, our design lead, has been working on putting our design in revit and testing different can layouts. The team has also been looking at cans to see which labels will work best for our design.

In other news, McCarthy Builders has partnered up with The Design Partnership for this competition. We have met with them, and they are just as eager to get started. With the help of McCarthy, we've also been able to secure wholesale can goods for the event. That means we will be looking for monetary donations for the approximately 5,000 cans we will need for our design. Donations of any amount are appreciated and are tax deductible. For smaller donations ($100 or less) please use the paypal link on the side bar.

We are also looking for team sponsors! If you're interested in becoming a sponsor of our team and being featured on our banner and t-shirts, please contact Fumiko Docker at (415) 777-3737. Our next meeting is on Wednesday with McCarthy where we will discuss next steps.

Meeting Notes

Last night we counted the votes and there was a three-way-tie! Our choices were the Palace of Fine Arts, the SFMOMA, and Lombard Street. It was a hard choice as all three depict the "Spirit of San Francisco." We made a decision during the meeting; however, we have to keep our lips sealed until our choice is secure with the people at CANstruction. Kristy, our design lead, will be putting together our design submittal. Fumi, our fundraising and CANstruction lead will be completing our potential donor list. Our next meeting is Tuesday, Feb 22 to go over the preliminary design sketch and next fundraising steps!

Note:
The blog is still in beta, so you may notice changes to the banner and side bar in the upcoming weeks as we get things finalized.

CANstruction 101

This blog was created as a way to showcase and develop some of the ideas that we have for CANstruction. Other states and counties have done this in the past, but this is the first ever San Francisco CANstruction competition. This is a non-profit competition where teams of architects, engineers and contractors build sculpture made out of canned food in order to raise food, money and awareness about local hunger. After the competition, all food and proceeds will go to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank. Past CANstruction sculptures have been been very creative and we are very excited and proud to be a part of this inaugural event.

On Monday we gathered images for design ideas for the sculpture. Some ideas included the Palace of Fine Arts, the SFMOMA, Lombard Street, Chinatown Gates, AT&T Park and more! Voting in the office ends tomorrow. We'll be tabulating the votes and are having our next meeting tomorrow at 5:30pm.
